Moranbah Community Centre

Council understand you have all been eagerly awaiting an announcement regarding the re-opening of the Moranbah Community Centre, with the $14 million refurbishment currently underway. These upgrades were made to enhance the facility’s functionality, comfort, and overall experience for our region’s patrons, ensuring it meets future needs.  Since 1974, the Moranbah Community Centre has been a cornerstone of the Isaac region. The revitalisation of the centre seeks to address the growing gaps in meeting current and future corporate and community needs in a facility which is approaching 50 years of age. From 2018, the Moranbah Community Centre (MCC) has hosted or catered 685 events, meetings and civic ceremonies making it the most used community centre in the Isaac region, generating more than $640,000

This renovation project will transform it into a modern, functional event centre, capable of hosting a variety of events that were previously not possible in our region.

While we are finalising the construction, fitout and return to business operations, we are initially opening our reservations for the facility from:

Tuesday, 22 April 2025.

We are working diligently behind the scenes to bring this date forward as early as possible, but this is contingent on furniture and equipment arriving on schedule. We will advise as soon as possible should bookings be available prior to this date, but wanted to provide assurance for users that we will have a return to services from this date at the very latest.

Council is also planning an open day for the facility in late March to allow community and clients a sneak peak of the refreshed space. Stay tuned for more information.

We appreciate your patience and look forward to showcasing the improved Moranbah Community Centre at 89 Mills Avenue, Moranbah 4744.

Background

Community gave feedback on the future use and suitability of the MCC and a community reference group was formed.

Over the last three years community centres around the Isaac region have been upgraded inline with Council’s broader strategy to improve community facilities.

Moranbah is made up of three and a half divisions and over a third of the region’s population. As such the funding of this project is reflective of the size of the population it will service.

The project will address two objectives, the first being the requirement to make the MCC compliant with building standards and the second is to cater for growing demand from hirers for modernised facilities.

On completion the MCC will provide an exceptional corporate function centre paired with community spaces that make the venue a viable alternative to using out of region facilities.

A building inspection in 2021 also identified general maintenance and other works required to bring components of the building in line with building codes and standards, particularly disabled access, firefighting equipment and lighting.

In order to better understand and develop a plan to address these limitations, Isaac Regional Council worked with the Community Reference Group, Bauhinia Architects and SGL Consulting Group team to prepare a master plan for the centre.

A range of issues have been identified by council stakeholders that impact functionality of the venue, with several improvements suggested to address these issues.
