Federal election priorities for one of Australia's top economic contributors

Critical road infrastructure that contributes billions to the nation’s GDP, the home to Australia’s largest one-day rodeo, and increased funding for university study hubs and childcare programs are at the forefront of Isaac’s federal election priorities.

The Isaac region is proud to be a vital contributor to Australia’s economy, producing world-class steelmaking coal from 35 active mines in the Bowen Basin, delivering 1.8 billion tonnes of coal, injecting over $270 billion into Australia’s GDP over the past decade.

With key export partners like Japan, China, India, South Korea, and Singapore, the Isaac region’s resources power industries worldwide. Isaac Regional Council Mayor Kelly Vea Vea said the Isaac region works hard not just for itself but for all Australians.

“With continued investment, we can build on our legacy as a resource and agricultural powerhouse, a leader in energy, and a thriving regional community,” Mayor Vea Vea said. “Our communities aren’t just asking for financial support for their own needs — we’re seeking investment to help us deliver for all Australians. But our region’s impact doesn’t stop at mining. We are also home to some of Australia’s finest beef, grains, sugar, and seafood, sustaining industries across the nation and beyond.”

Looking to the future, the Isaac region has 26 renewable energy projects underway. These initiatives are helping Australia transition to a low-carbon economy, showing commitment to innovation and adaptation.

To continue delivering for all Australians, Council is calling for investment in critical infrastructure, including:

  • Royalties Road Package: $517.5 million for upgrades to essential transport corridors, including the Peak Downs Highway between Moranbah and Clermont, Saraji Road, and Dysart-Middlemount Road, which are vital for connecting communities and supporting our industries.
  • Nebo Showgrounds Master Plan Stage 2: $9.75 million to upgrade this community hub that supports agriculture, rural sports, community groups, and major events like the iconic Nebo Rodeo.
  • Regional University Study Hub Program: Permanent Federal Government funding and expanded support for Regional University Study Hubs. These hubs provide local access to tertiary education, addressing workforce shortages in healthcare, agriculture, mining, and renewable energy.
  • Increase Community Child Care Fund: Over 800 regional centres applied nationwide, but only 400 received funding, leaving a significant resource gap. Many centres, like in the Isaac region, rely on minimal funding for sustainability, yet the capped model remains insufficient.
