Road Maintenance Performance Contract

Funding for annual government contracts to maintain state-owned roads in Isaac Regional Council’s area needs to increase by $1.5 million annually and $10 million is urgently needed to fix the work backlog.

Rising costs of maintaining the state-controlled road network under the Road Maintenance Performance Contract (RMPC) has ballooned leaving a backlog of potholes and defects.

It is reaching the point that if Council don’t see an increase in the funding for RMPC of at least $1.5 million, Council will need to look at scaling back services for the State’s roads.

There is a backlog of over $10 million in existing defects on major roads across the region which need funding and without intervention by the State many of them will fall into disrepair.

The recurring annual funding has not increased to match cost increases from inflation. It has been stagnant for more than three years. This means that, as the network steward, Council cannot maintain the state’s network to the levels required to service the agriculture and mining sectors.

The state-controlled network that Council maintains through the RMPC includes 1,170km of sealed road and 67km of unsealed road.

All political parties need to consider these requests seriously for the safety and well-being of the residents, workers, communities and industries of the Isaac region.
